why niger

  • Niger is a country in west Africa named after the Niger river . it is one of the least developed countries in the world . it consistently ranks near the bottom in the united nations’human development index (HDI) ; it was ranked 187th of 188 countries for 2015 and 189th out of 189 countries in the 2018 and 2019 reports.
  • 42.9% of nigeriens live in poverty, earning less than $1.90 per day. 83% of the population lives in rural areas. 20% of nigeriens cannot meet basic daily food and nutrition needs.
  • Hospital beds include inpatient beds available in public, private, general, and specialized hospitals and rehabilitation centers in relation to population is one of the lowest in the world, estimated to be 0.25 bed /1,000 people.
  • According to unicef, over 50 per cent of children in niger aged 7-16 are not in school. geographic gaps in school coverage and poor retention rates remain unaddressed, quality has worsened, and inequities have deepened, with the poorest and rural children least likely to attend school.
  • Furthermore, fewer than 60 per cent of primary school students enter secondary school.
